From its founding in 1998, New Music New College has been known for presenting cutting-edge music in imaginative ways, frequently adopting unconventional performance venues and treating music as theater. Each season presents five programs featuring today’s leading contemporary music specialists as well as regular performances by New College students and faculty.
The public concerts are only the most visible aspect of New Music New College. NMNC has a strong educational mission, and is fully integrated into the music curriculum at New College of Florida, the honors college of the State of Florida. The programs of NMNC feed into courses and tutorials, which in turn lead to the creation of new programs and projects. NMNC has indeed become a laboratory for interdisciplinary research, with students presenting papers at professional meetings such as the Annual Conference on Social Theory, Politics and the Arts. NMNC Director Stephen Miles has published essays in journals such as Perspectives of New Music, detailing the fruitful mix of theory and practice that makes NMNC such a rich environment for exploration by students, audiences, and professional musicians alike.
